Rector's Update - The month of Ramadan 2019

30 April, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

The month of Ramadan is celebrated this year from May 6th to June 4th , during which time observant Muslims fast daily, from 4:30 am to app. 7:30 pm. Family gatherings to mark the daily break of the fast ("Iftar") are prevalent. During Ramadan, studies at the Hebrew University will take place as usual, but we should reasonably accommodate the special needs of students who fast. In particular, we expect teachers to positively consider students' requests to miss classes (except laboratories) that are held after 6 pm, and to exempt students who fast from taking in-class tests that are held after 6 pm.

It is also advisable to encourage students in your classes to privately discuss with you their special accommodations during this period. In cases of doubt, please discuss the issue with the Vice-Dean of your faculty or with one of us. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Best regards,

Prof. Miriam Schiff, Head of the Teaching Procedures Committee

Prof. Mona Khoury Kassabri, the President's advisor on Equal Opportunity to Arab Students

Prof. Barak Medina, Rector
