Letter to Stanford President from HU Management

Dear President Saller, and Provost Martinez,

We, the President, the current and the previous Rectors (provosts) of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, write following your October 9, 2023 Statement, titled “on the Middle East conflict.” Stanford University is the world’s lighthouse of academic research and teaching. Unfortunately, your Statement does not meet the most minimal standards of moral leadership, courage, and commitment to truth.

Notice of Postponement of the Academic Year - Students

8 October, 2023

Dear students,

The State of Israel has been under attack since yesterday morning. Many students and faculty members were drafted into reserve service, and we pray that they will return safely soon.

After a discussion and assessment of the situation, the Hebrew University, in cooperation with the other research universities in Israel, decided to postpone the start of the academic year by a week.

The academic year will begin on Sunday, October 22, 2023. The first semester will end on the planned date - 22.1.2024.

Friends and members of the university community,

The State of Israel has been under attack since yesterday morning. Our hearts go out to the families of those murdered. We send wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured and are full of hope that all the abducted, captured, and missing people will return soon. We strengthen the hands of all those who work night and day to restore security, peace, and routine to the State of Israel.

We stand together in support of the brave soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the dedicated security forces and the resilient residents of the southern region, who are currently facing a grave and unprecedented terrorist threat.

The academic year and most of the exams are already behind us, and while the public storm focused on in all my previous letters is not over, in this letter I will focus on updated achievements of the past year, and on the future academic challenges we face.
